The Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts and Venture Scouts of Unit 718 made their inital trek into the East Fork of the San Gabriel River 11-12 April. The afternoon began slowly due to heavy traffic on the freeway but the group of 11 youth and 6 adults eventually hit the trailhead about 6 pm. After a short 2 mile hike, we set camp before it was too dark to see.
It was a very warm and breezy night and the group enjoyed a fireside together centered around the Book of Mormon. The Boy Scouts will be reading this sacred book of scripture together for the rest of 2008 with a goal to finish by Christmas.
The youth included Aram, Tanner, Cort, John, Chris, Ryan, Matt, Connor, Devon, Nick and Joseph.
The adults were Bryce, Dave, Dale, Bill, Brian and John.
Matt and John had a slight struggle on the river crossing, as you can see by this photo. Both were soon passed out in the sleeping bags.
Ryan and Aram are true Scouts and love being outdoors. The next morning was spent preparing breakfast and exploring the canyon. The adults showed the youth prospecting and gold panning skills or tried their luck fishing. The scouts did a great job of getting wet trying NOT to fall in the water.
A short hike out and back to Fallbrook Saturday afternoon.
